Friends Andreia and Leid navigate the dangerous reality of Belo Horizonte’s favelas in Juliana Antunes’ award-winning debut documentary, Baronesa.

Their days seem to be deceivingly calm and untroubled, but the threat of violence is never far away and Andreia dreams of moving to Baronesa, a safer neighbourhood nearby.

The director spent five years in a Belo Horizonte slum working with a non-professional cast, and as a result, delivers a remarkably authentic and intimate film which draws us into the daily life of people living in favelas.

Please be advised that this film contains discussion of sexual assault which some viewers might find distressing.
