About Our Spoken Word Screening

We’ve teamed up with We Are Parable to present a special screening of Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk, featuring an intimate poetry performance from Stephanie Ampofo.

Set to Nicholas Brittel‘s uplifting, Oscar®-nominated score, this live performance will immerse you in the world of Tish and Fonny with intricate, intimate wordplay.

About If Beale Street Could Talk

Set in early 1970s Harlem, If Beale Street Could Talk tells the story of Tish and Fonny.

Tish is a warm-hearted nineteen-year old girl, and Fonny is a young sculptor and the father of her unborn child.

The couple’s sweet romance is horribly derailed when Fonny is falsely accused of rape and imprisoned. Tish and their families race to clear his name before the baby is born.

A story about love persisting in the face of racial oppression and injustice, Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) brings together a talented young cast, which includes Stephan James (Selma, Race) as Fonny and newcomer Kiki Layne as Tish.
