In a nutshell

East London photographer Grant Fleming’s new solo show documenting the momentus events that took place in West Africa in January 2017, in two parts - ‘The Journey South’ & ‘Gambia Has Decided!!!’

Tell me more

In January 2017, Grant Fleming was in West Africa working on a book, and decided to make a little side-trip to Gambia for a few days to cover the inauguration of new President Adama Barrow and his return from exile in Senegal.

Twenty minutes after arriving, Grant had been arrested by the outgoing (but refusing to- budge) dictator’s brutal secret police and warned firmly as war loomed not to take pictures in the country or he wouldn’t see home again. 5 tumultuous weeks, 10,000 images, a documentary film and 2 more arrests later, ‘Gambia Has Decided!’ (the slogan of the people’s fight for democracy and struggle to end a 22 year reign of terror) will be Grant's 3rd solo exhibition.

The exhibition tracing Grant's journey via Morocco, across the desert of Western Sahara, navigating smuggler’s routes in Mauritania and traversing Senegal before reaching Gambia.
