Here to Stay: AWAAZ X Voices Radio Takeover

AWAAZ & Voices Radio take over Streetside for a full day of South Asian sounds and storytelling.

Awaaz – meaning ‘noise’ or ‘sound’ in Punjabi/Hindi – is a collective of DJs from Voices Radio, bringing together sounds from across the diaspora and subcontinent, from house, jazz, funk and soul to dubstep, techno, Bhangra, reggae, hip hop and beyond.

For this takeover, they’re going deeper.

Across 7 hours, DJs will explore the histories, people, places and sounds that have shaped South Asian music and British diaspora culture. From the rise of the Asian Underground and the history of South Asian radio, to Bengali resistance music, Asian Dub Foundation, and the history of South Asian gigs at Rich Mix.

11AM — 12PM Brother Sanjiv — The Rise of the Asian Underground.

12PM — 1PM Ramnik — The History and role of South Asian Radio and how it supported and shaped British diaspora.

1PM — 2PM Nehmat — Why Asian Dub Foundation Changed My Life.

2PM — 3PM Lagnajita — Bengali Resistance Music.

3PM — 4PM Rav — A Listening Session from a Box of Old CDs.

4PM — 5PM Sway of the Verses — Tracing South Asian Gigs at Rich Mix.

5PM — 6PM Amris — Ancestral Machine, a surreal and experimental journey through South Asian sounds.
