6pm – The Mezzanine Gallery:
Photojournalist Julio Etchart gives a conducted tour of his Imagining Orwell exhibition.

6.45pm – The Stage:
The tour is followed by a screening of Michael Radford’s 1984.

After the screening  there will be short panel discussion with audience participation on the relevance of George Orwell’s work in our uncertain times, with journalist Vanessa Baird, co-editor of the New Internationalist magazine, and Dr David Bate.

Journalist Vanessa Baird has been a co-editor of the New Internationalist magazine for many years and has written on everything from migration, religion and equality, to indigenous activism, climate change, feminism and global LGBT rights.

Dr. David Bate is a Professor of Photography at the University of Westminster School of Arts. As well as supervising PhD work and teaching on the MA Photography Arts programme, he is an artist and writer with a well known international reputation for his work on photography, visual arts history, theory and culture.

Julio Etchart has long been at the cutting edge of contemporary photojournalism. At home wherever in the world he happens to be working, nowhere is taken as exotic or ‘other’ ; the focus is always on the story, never its trappings
