Commencing the month in style, we’re now screening 2022’s Cannes Palme d’Or winner Triangle of Sadness. This is director Ruben Östlund’s second prize from the French film festival following his surprise win with 2017’s The Square. Triangle of Sadness is an internationally produced Buñuelian style farce, criticising the social elite, beauty standards and class structures. Following a disaster on a luxury yacht, elite holiday-goers and company workers are placed into a situation where class hierarchies are flipped on their head; where the elite have no power, and where the worker is king. It’s a fascinating sociological exercise with some genuinely hilarious, shocking, and gross moments. This is definitely one to watch in a crowd! Featuring fantastic performances from Hollywood favourite Woody Harrelson and rising star Harris Dickinson (See How They Run, Where the Crawdads Sing), make sure you catch it with us this month. Check out the trailer for Triangle of Sadness.

From Fri 4 Nov, we are very proud to bring in the first of our two Afrofuturistic films this month – Neptune Frost. Labelled as ‘a future cult classic in the making’ by critics, Neptune Frost could be categorised as a queer, sci-fi musical, but it goes beyond genre – watching this feels like experiencing a unique piece of art. Featuring a truly incredible soundtrack, vibrant cinematography and stunning costumes, this film is one of the hidden gems of the year. Check out this article from WIRED about the importance of Afrofuturism, a glistening Guardian review of Neptune Frost and the trailer for Neptune Frost.

From Fri 11 Nov we are screening the long-awaited Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Ryan Coogler (Creed and Fruitvale Station) returns as director, following on from the success of 2018’s Black Panther. In Wakanda Forever, the leaders of the kingdom of  Wakanda must fight to protect their nation from invading forces in the wake of King T’Challa’s death, as a new threat emerges from the hidden undersea nation of  Talokan. King T’Challa was of course portrayed by Chadwick Boseman, whose tragic death has undoubtedly massively influenced the events of the film. While still acting as a big budget superhero film, Wakanda Forever will also serve as a poignant and celebratory tribute to Boseman, which promises to pull on the heartstrings of fans and non-fans alike. Black Panther’s incredible vision of Afrofuturism and anti-colonialism was one of the most significant cultural defining movies on this side of the millennium; the sequel can be expected to do the same. ‘Armageddon Time’ image courtesy of Universal Pictures Int (UK).

On Fri 18 Nov, we are bringing in Armageddon Time, a compelling drama from acclaimed director James Gray (Ad Astra, The Lost City of Z), which just missed out on the Palme d’Or to Triangle of Sadness. In Armageddon Time, James Gray expertly confronts his privilege, looking back at his childhood living in Reagan-era New York in a coming-of-rage story, hinting at the pivotal events of the 1980s that led to the rise of Trump and right wing politicians in present day America. Featuring an impressive cast with Anne Hathaway, Anthony Hopkins and Jeremy Strong (and a Jessica Chastain cameo as Maryanne Trump!) – all giving great performances, this will surely be a film hotly tipped for awards at the Oscars. Read A.V Club’s glowing review of Armageddon Time, describing it as a ‘timeless’ and ‘timely’ movie.
