From Wed 5 Apr catch Air, the riveting tale of how Nike pursued a shoe deal with basketball then-rookie Michael Jordan, creating a partnership that revolutionised the world of sports and contemporary culture. Two-time Academy Award winner Ben Affleck (Good Will Hunting, Argo) stars and directs, with Matt Damon (The Martian, Saving Private Ryan) Jason Bateman (Ozark, Arrested Development) Viola Davis (The Woman King, Widows) and Marlon Wayans (Requiem for a Dream, White Chicks) filling out a star-studded supporting cast. From Fri 14 Apr it’s time for the hilarious comedy-horror Renfield, directed by Chris Mckay (The Lego Batman Movie, The Tomorrow War). Utilising the legendary Bram Stoker characters, the film focuses on Count Dracula’s lackey R.M Renfield as he finds a new lease on life in modern-day New Orleans – and decides to finally stand up to his creator in hopes of finally breaking free of his servitude.

Nicholas Hoult (The Menu, Skins) stars, supported by the icon that is Nicolas Cage (National Treasure, Pig) and the multitalented Awkwafina (The Farewell, Crazy Rich Asians). Cage is known for his sometimes eccentric acting style, and he fully commits to Dracula – giving an all-in performance that only he is capable of. Have a read of Empire’s adoring review, and be sure to check out the fantastical trailer!

From Fri 14 Apr you can also catch the visually delightful animated fantasy adventure film Suzume, the first anime to be in competition at Berlin Film Festival since Spirited Away. The titular character Suzume, a 17-year-old girl, must prevent a series of disasters across Japan with the help of a mysterious young man. Directed by the visionary Makoto Shinkai (Your Name, Weathering with You), Suzume promises to follow up the widespread critical acclaim of Shinkai’s previous work. From Fri 28 Apr we are welcoming in Sundance Film Festival favourite Polite Society, the directorial debut of Nida Manzoor (We Are Lady Parts). This British romantic comedy-drama focuses on Ria Khan, an aspiring stuntwoman and martial arts fanatic. When her sister drops out of art school and gets engaged to man not of Ria’s liking, Ria decides she must save her from her impending marriage, and pull off a wedding heist in the name of independence and sisterhood. This month we also welcome back Queer East Festival with a programme of screenings that showcases boundary-pushing queer cinema, moving image work and live arts from, and about, East and Southeast Asia and its diaspora communities. Highlights include the UK premiere of About Us But Not About Us, a special screening of House of Hummingbird and two programmes of international shorts.
