Momentum is a 6-month professional development programme for Black filmmakers and content creators, running from November 2023 to April 2024 across the UK. Created, programmed and delivered by We Are Parable and supported by Channel 4 and Sony Pictures Television.

Programme 1: I Choose to Close My Eyes For You

All The Little Things (dir. Meena Ayittey)
All The Little Things follows Adae, a young Black creative in an advertising agency. We begin to see how a series of interactions threaten to bring buried tensions and fresh resentments to a boiling point. Will Adae be able to move forward and pursue his dream job?

The Thing About Knocking Doors (dir. Akpoufuoma Edafe)
With the knocks on the door, Martins must struggle to either leave the door closed or open it to the lust he struggles with.

Rebirth (dir. Chris Chuky)
Rebirth is an exploration of transformation and self-discovery. This is a symbolic journey through various emotional landscapes, Kelvyn Colt shackled and searching for freedom and his struggle to break free from the mental and emotional chains of past relationships and personal battles. As he navigates through darkness and confusion, he follows a guiding light on a quest that leads him through moments of anger, hedonism, and vulnerability, ultimately reaching a cathartic release.

You Fit The Description (dir. Davy Lazare)
Award-winning short film that flips the script on Stop & Search. Nico, a young black man, will harness the power of his community, to teach the justice system a lesson.

Blades (dir. Chris Chuky)
A group of young Black boys run into a building. One of them is about to do the unimaginable…

Programme 2: The Infinity of the Sky

Silver Static (dir. Dominic Stewart)
Fusing drama and body-horror, Silver Static follows the reunion of two estranged ex-lovers as they revisit the joys and pains of their shared past and its very real impact on their beings.

Homegrown (dir. Corrine Walker)
Inspired by true events, Homegrown follows Nicole, a young and hardworking Bajan fruit picker working on a UK fruit farm on the hottest day of the year. Drawn to the UK under false pretences of good pay, she is ready to work hard and endure exploitative conditions for financial reward. But as the temperatures rise and promises are broken, Nicole must take matters into her own hands in this dark drama which uncovers the reality behind our food supply chain.

Blueprint (dir. Amber Akaunu)
The British Library commissioned Amber Akaunu, a Liverpool-born Nigerian-German filmmaker and artist, to engage creatively with the newly acquired Beryl Gilroy archive. Inspired deeply by the archive, Amber produced a zine and accompanying film, both titled The Blueprint, that explores the idea that Black women, and their archives, are the blueprint, to which Black women in the present, and future, build on.
