Dailies Presents Grief, Community & Familial Ties Fri 26 Jul

How do we find joy and freedom amidst the grieving process? How does community shape and inform this experience? The curated films, sublimely crafted blend multi-faceted characters, a lyrical tone and aesthetic to ruminate on brotherhood, parental bonds and the significance of familial ties.

There will also be an opportunity for filmmakers and audiences to interact and connect with each other during and after the short film screenings.

Speakers:

Tomisin Adepeju is a British-Nigerian filmmaker based in London. His award-winning shorts have screened at over 150 film festivals, including Sundance, BFI London Film Festival and London Short Film Festival. Tomisin is a 2018 Edinburgh Talent Lab alumnus, in 2019, he was one of the 12 filmmakers selected to take part in the annual NETWORK@LFF development programme at the BFI London Film Festival.

He has also written about film for MUBI, BFI and several other platforms. He is currently developing his debut feature, The Light of the Living with Ken Loach’s Sixteen Films and BFI.

Caleb Azumah Nelson is a British-Ghanaian writer, photographer and filmmaker, living in South East London. He was shortlisted for the BBC National Short Story Award 2020 for his story Pray – which he then adapted as a short film and directed for B-Side Production and BBC Films, with David Jonsson (INDUSTRY) starring. The film premiered at the 2023 Locarno Film Festival.

His debut novel, OPEN WATER was published by Viking (UK), as well as by Grove Atlantic (US). It has since been longlisted for the Desmond Elliot prize and the Gordon Burn prize, shortlisted for the Waterstones Book of the Year 2021, and won the Costa First Novel Award 2021. Caleb’s second novel, SMALL WORLDS, was published earlier this year by Viking (UK) and Grove Atlantic (US), as well as internationally. The novel has received high praise and recently won the Dylan Thomas Prize.

Warda Mohamed is a BIFA-nominated filmmaker. Her first experimental short SORRY MY SOMALI IS NOT VERY GOOD premiered on BFI Player in June 2021 and has been screened at BFI Southbank and Aesthetica Film Festival. She also participated in the writers room for the second season of Nida Manzoor’s Channel 4 comedy series WE ARE LADY PARTS.

Warda’s debut narrative short – MUNA – was backed by BBC Film, in association with UK Muslim Film and Sabrina Elba, and is currently on its festival run. Making its International Premiere at 74th Berlinale Film Festival, the film has made Official Selection at over thirty film festivals globally – playing across domestic programmes such as Raindance, BFI London Film Festival and Aspen Shortsfest.

MUNA was nominated for Best British Short Film at the British Independent Film Awards and at the London Critics Circle Film Awards 2023, and won Best Short Film at the British Short Film Awards. Warda is currently developing her debut feature screenplay MOON with BBC Film and Working Title. She is currently developing her debut TV pilot as part of this years’ cohort on the prestigious Channel 4 Screenwriting course.

Runyararo Mapfumo was nominated for the 2022 BAFTA emerging talent (fiction) award for her work on Sex Education S3. She was named a 2022 ‘Star of Tomorrow’ by Screen Daily and a 2022 BAFTA Breakthrough writer/director. She directed the second block of Netflix’s hit tv series, Sex Education and has recently completed directing the second block of KAOS, an upcoming mythological dark-comedy television series created by Charlie Covell for Netflix. Runyararo is currently developing her debut feature film.

Michael Jobling is an editor, writer and director, based in London and Nottingham. His short drama The Walk was awarded BFI Network funding and is produced by Griffin Pictures Ltd. Starring BAFTA winning actor, Adeel Akhtar, written by Sophie Ellerby, it tells the story of Amar, who, after his local bus route is cut, must walk a 24-mile round trip to and from his nearest JobCentre to avoid his benefits being cut. The Walk went on to be nominated for Best Short at the 2023 BFI London Film Festival.
