This year’s London Borough of Tower Hamlets Holocaust Memorial Day event for schools is in partnership with UK Jewish Film and Rich Mix.

Screenings:
People of the Book (10 mins) brings to life the rich and complex history of the Jews in Europe, from the era of Abraham through World War I. Crafted as an experiential piece that aims to evoke emotions rather than just present facts, the film is made for young people with its concise, engaging format. The film aims to provide a comprehensive historical context, tracing the journey of Jewish communities across Europe over 3500 years.

The Ship That Turned Back (32 mins) is a ‘documemory’ love letter, based on the memoir of a child’s wartime escape told from two perspectives. The grandfather recalls his harrowing experience as a 7-year-old child and the film’s boy narrator leads us through the family’s escape by train and ship. The film combines memories, archival footage, dramatic re-enactment with family members, and children’s drawings that come to life through animation.

Between the Lines (11 mins) is set in 1941, and portrays a Jewish woman on the run with forged papers who involuntarily shares a train compartment with a German officer.

The films will be followed by a Q&A with Holocaust educator Mike Levy and UK Jewish Film’s education manager, Rachel Burns. This free of charge event is aimed at students in Year 9 (aged 13+) and above, and is suitable for students of Religious Education, History and Citizenship.

It was fantastic for us. My students really got a lot out of it. It was a really student appropriate film choice… I really liked that the students got to speak on stage and make the pledge too; I was so proud of them.

It opened up a perspective of the Holocaust I didn’t have before.
