As we commemorate 50 years since the end of the Vietnam War, we reflect on a significant chapter in history. The war, which raged from 1955 to 1975 across Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, ended with the fall of Saigon and the beginning of a new chapter for millions. In the wake of the war, many Vietnamese fled their homeland facing danger and an uncertain future.
The ‘Boat People’ were refugees who embarked on perilous journeys, often in overcrowded, makeshift boats, seeking asylum in neighbouring countries. Over the next 20 years, more than 800,000 Vietnamese fled by sea, risking their lives to escape political persecution, imprisonment, economic collapse, and a future shrouded in fear and repression. Many perished at sea as victims of piracy, trafficking, or drowning, while others faced lives of hardship in refugee camps.
This exhibition honours their resilience and courage. Through personal stories, photographs and artefacts, we celebrate their new beginnings here in the UK, where many found safety and built vibrant communities that have enriched our society. The stories of these individuals are a testament to the power of hope, survival and the human spirit.
