Monica (Sanaa Lathan) and Quincy (Omar Epps) grew up in the same neighbourhood and have known each other since childhood. As they grow into adults, they fall in love, and also share another all-consuming passion: basketball.

While struggling to make their relationship work, they follow separate career paths though high school and college basketball and, they hope, into stardom in the big leagues,
