In this performance, artist and filmmaker Miko Revereza presents a live iteration of his work-in-progress film Nothing to Declare. Drawing from a personal archive of images, accompanied by live narration and audio, the project examines strategies of smuggling through film, using the Balikbayan box – a cardboard container used by Filipinos abroad to send goods home – as a metaphor for what can, and cannot, be carried across borders.
“A film is luggage. Film is what you can fit in the luggage. Everything else is baggage you gotta leave behind. But if it is physically possible to fit a little more into a Balikbayan Box it will be found. The loophole will be exploited. Nothing to Declare explores the spaces between frames, imagining acts of hiding within the film’s materiality and the possibility of smuggling oneself across borders. Through live performance the project emerges from a stream of consciousness, navigating an ontology of borders, and revealing how meaning, memory, and objects can slip through the cracks.” (Miko Revereza)
