In Xiang Chen‘s breathtaking debut, the apocalypse arrives not with a bang but an upload. The world’s population has migrated its consciousness into a vast digital New World, leaving physical Earth eerily, beautifully abandoned. Sixteen-year-old Cheng Qi is the only one who won’t log in — and so he walks, alone, through the haunting ruins of a deserted China.
The empty mega-cities here aren’t just backdrop — they’re the beating heart of the film. Chen uses vast, silent wide shots to make the case that something irreplaceable has been lost. As Cheng Qi pushes forward, even the frame itself begins to shrink around him, until he steps beyond its edges entirely — a boy too real for the world that remains.
