As a writer-director, Jane Schoenbrun has already built a distinctive body of work, with their horror films We’re All Going to the World’s Fair and I Saw the TV Glow exploring online life, identity, memory and nostalgia. Their latest film is a two-hander between Hannah Einbinder (Hacks) and Gillian Anderson (The X-Files, Sex Education, Scoop), with the former playing an indie filmmaker set to reboot the cult slasher flick “Camp Miasma” with the film’s original final girl, played by Anderson. Both actresses completely game to inhabit the distinctive horror-infused worlds that Schoenbrun is building.
Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is an intellectual sleazefest, an ode to slashers and a takedown of modern industry politics. But at its core is the brewing connection between two women, bound by movies and desire. Every scene between Einbinder and Anderson is so charged, you’ll be afraid the screen might catch fire.
