We are now celebrating the third year of our free After School Club, a strand of our Flip the Script film education programme that’s been running since the 2022/2023 school year. This year, we’ve expanded the club to host two local schools, running 24 sessions for each school across three terms. Here’s a recap of what we’ve been up to last term, and what we’re looking forward to for 2025!
At After School Club, pupils have been trying their hand at the different technical elements of filmmaking. Led by our Schools and Film Education Coordinator, Helen Baldwin, the children get stuck into collaborative and creative film projects of their own.
Pupils have been collaborating in small groups to develop their own stories and capture them on film. For many, this was their first taste of filmmaking, giving them a crash course on all the core filming and editing skills. They learned how to use green screen, create their own soundscapes, produce handmade stop motion films, and add voiceovers to their creations.
Hear what the pupils had to say about their experience last year:
While developing communication skills from drama techniques like improvisation and storytelling, pupils were able to show off their artistic sides, building their confidence, self-esteem, and presentation skills. This was a great chance for them to discover their talents as filmmakers.
We’ve now completed our second term of After School Club of the 24/25 school year, and what an exciting term it has been! From human stop motion to green screen magic, presentation skills, and dance parties galore, the students have had a wonderful time, gained an enormous amount of confidence and explored their creativity.
At the end of the term, we hosted a sharing session for parents and caregivers at each club to get an insight into what their children have been working on. Here’s what their families had to say:
We created two joyous films, celebrating all the wonderful hard work of the children – check them out below.
With the students arriving at the session in their amazing world book day attire, we simply had to create a film further exploring their characters. In the Book Verse all the characters were living mostly harmoniously, until they were swept up by a tornado and found themselves in our After School Club. We shared with the characters all about the fantastic things we had been getting up to!
The students in this school LOVE the character Perry The Platypus, and alongside a passion for the story of the Titanic, we set sail on our turbulent journey in this film. Perry The Platypus is on the Titanic with Rose and Jack, when it sinks. Being a platypus, he is able to swim away. He finds himself at school, frightened of the kids, so they teach him all about their film club and he decides to join them!
We have one more term left of the year, and we can’t wait to see what the students come up with next! Check back in summer for more movie magic!
