When judged anonymously, architecture competitions can provide a platform of equal footing – where established heavy hitters battle it out alongside newcomers. Many of the sector’s household names cut their teeth in competitions, launching them into practice with a bang.

But competitions come at a price. Costly in time, money and energy, enormous resources are delegated towards them, often with little to show in return. Opaque judging processes, little to no compensation and waving goodbye to your own intellectual property highlight just a few of the ways competitions can be highly exploitative.

How does all of this reflect the way we work in the wider profession, where practices jostle in the never ending race to the bottom? What does it say about how architects are valued? How can the process be more transparent, more equitable and more sustainable?

Join us for the final Accelerate Debate of the year, where we will be joined by guest speakers from across the sector, prepared to pitch in on how to make competitions healthier.
