Children’s Letters for Palestinian Childhoods – Art and Storytelling Workshop

Through creative activities, participants will explore how art and storytelling can build connections and understanding across political borders, fostering creativity and solidarity. We invite all young people and families interested in engaging in conversations about Palestine and its global significance and connections.

About the workshop Facilitators:

Dr. Rana Abu-Zhaya is a Palestinian developmental scientist. Her research examines the features of language input that infants learn from, and the mechanisms that underlie language learning in infancy. She is trained as a speech-language therapist and has worked extensively with children with autism and language disorders. She is a lecturer in the division of Psychology and Language Sciences at UCL.

Dr. Feryal Awan is an Algerian-Pakistani mother, researcher, and lecturer at the Institute of Education, UCL. Over many years, she has worked closely with Palestinian children, engaging with their stories to document and understand their lives under Israeli occupation. She is currently writing a book about childhood and children’s media in Palestine. Additionally, her recent research delves into how minoritised children in London express solidarity with Palestinian children.

What to expect:

  • Art and Storytelling Activities: Participants will engage in art-making and letter-writing as forms of storytelling, creating letters and visual pieces that reflect their own experiences, insights, and messages of solidarity for Palestinian children.
  • Creative Expression: The workshops encourage participants to use various art forms—drawings, collages, poems, and more—to communicate their ideas.
  • Cultural Understanding and Solidarity: Through facilitated discussions, participants will explore themes of childhood, resistance, and solidarity, drawing connections between their lives and those of Palestinian children.

The storytelling workshop comes with an open invitation to families to view the exhibition from 13:00 – 15.00.

The Family Afternoon and workshop are open to all young people and families interested in engaging in conversations about Palestine and its global significance and connections. The workshop is suitable for children aged 11+.
