Come along for a night of amazing music, poetry and theatre recreating the experience of an Azmari Bet. These are traditional clubs found hidden away in the back streets of Addis Ababa where musicians entertain and amuse, and customers come to drink, eat, dance, chill and get away from the hustle and bustle of life.

At the heart of the Azmari Bet is the Azmari minstrel. Whether playing the one-stringed masinko fiddle, the five-stringed krar lyre, singing songs – often made up on the spot to praise or make fun of customers – dancing, or reciting poetry. These are consummate performers who have learnt what it is to entertain – their livelihood depends on it!

Before Azmari Bet begins, join us for a standup set from South African comedian Ambrose Uren. Book your tickets for the set here.

He will share his unique story in this energy-packed comedy show filled with unexpected silly twists. From living in a static caravan he calls home to embarking on a wild search for his roots Uren navigates his journey using humour and raw honesty. Come and bear witness to the hilarity as this charming comedian uses sharp wit and engaging storytelling to challenge his own African-ishness.
