Melancholia – A Portrait of M is the UK premiere of an experimental film/dance piece by Mitsuyo Uesugi; a butoh practitioner of over 50 years and former student of one of butoh’s founders, Kazuo Ohno. The work inhabits butoh’s experimental roots by exploring the world of digital performance in the wake of COVID-19.

Hijikata Mon Amour pays homage to one of butoh’s founders, Tatsumi Hijikata. Performing in an exact replica of legendary red costume Hijikata wore in 1968, Vangeline conjures Hijikata’s ghost and celebrates butoh’s wide-reaching legacy and historical treasures.
