Hosted by Decolonising The Archive, this event responds to the ‘Sloane Lab’ project and what the group feel is an urgent need to properly frame Hans Sloane’s collections held at the British Museum, British Library and Natural History Museum in the context of African enslavement and the extraction of African and indigenous knowledges (and labour). The Sloane Lab Knowledge Base aims to support digital access to information describing Sloane’s collection held across these three institutions and the project seeks to learn more about how to frame this collection.
Rather than centre Sloane and his extraction, DTA have chosen to focus on approaches rooted in cultural frameworks and understandings with a day of interactive workshops, presentations and provocations from leading African heritage thinkers and doers in reparations, ethnopharmacology and (digital) heritage practice in the UK, the US and the Caribbean.
