This event will be a collaboration between Pandit G (Asian Dub Foundation Soundsystem) and Sonia Mehta (Salaam Funk), both of whom are founding members of Rich Mix and sit on our new Artistic Sub-Group Committee. The event will reflect on the Asian Underground then and now with panellists sharing personal experiences of social change through creative expression and live music.

John Pandit aka Pandit G is one of the original founders of Asian Dub Foundation staying true to sound system and alternative culture for the last 30 years. He weaves in political anthems with classic dub, jungle, Asian and global sounds relevant to the movements of our times. His identity and that of his music has been shaped by being active in these spaces in both organising campaigns and responding to them through music. Pandit G will be bringing the party through his signature sounds on this night.

Sonia Mehta is an Asian vocalist, whose career is shaped by sounds of the diaspora. She has collaborated with Asian Dub Foundation, Sinead O’Connor, Nasha Collective, Visionary Underground, Aref Durvesh, State of Bengal and many more. She heads up her band Salaam and Funk, where all her influences come together to bring a sense of belonging through poetic imagination. She makes a point to only sing in the languages of her ancestors and to decolonise/occupy space as a site of resistance to historic colonial oppression. This performance will be a story telling recital of migration, longing and belonging through song.

There will be stalls hosted by emerging artists and food on offer by Oitij-Jo kitchen on the night.

All profits from this event will be donated by the organiser to Medecin Sans Frontiers to aid civilians in current conflict zones.

Roots and Endz is a co-curated project and series of events exploring contemporary South Asian culture and the intergenerational, intersectional impact of colonisation, supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.
