The Urban Voices workshops invite participants to explore urban space around Rich Mix through a form of ‘place-listening’.

As an alternative to the dominant urban development idea of place-making, which is often a visual process producing promotional images designed to sell a place, ‘place-listening’ focuses on an immersive and multidirectional engagement with a place that is oriented around observing what is not necessarily readily visible or tangibly manifest in urban space.

Participants are invited to go for a walk along a specific route, accompanied by partially blind guides. The guides will encourage the participants to translate what they observe into words as a form of ‘audio description’. These audio descriptions will be recorded and subsequently turned into an audio walk by the artist collective ZURBS. The audio walk will be the starting point of a big international conference at Rich Mix for policy makers, urban planners, researchers and architects, that puts listening at the centre of debates on urban change. The participants are given a platform for their voices to be heard by the people that are in charge of developing London.
