Join Tamasha artist Afsana Begum, a Brick Lane local, as she guides us on an adventure around the place she calls home. Beyond the curry house strip and trendy bar culture, this place has history. Come and discover the real Brick Lane – from Bengali laskars to Satanic wedding guests, local wrestlers to an unlikely alliance of squatters – these people have cast their shadows onto these pavements and invite you to see Brick Lane as you’ve never seen it before.

We Are Shadows: Brick Lane is an immersive smart phone adventure on foot by Coney & Tamasha, inspired by where we live: E1 in Tower Hamlets. Followed by an installation at Rich Mix, at the adventures finishing location. Developed in collaboration with local Bengali women and students from Mulberry Schools Trust, this is a project co-created by those who know the area best.

Participants’ adventure will begin with a phone call on their mobile phones from which they will be navigated in and around Brick Lane, taking them on a magical-realist journey where shadows are revealed around every corner. The game is for playing in pairs, so try to book in twos. However, it can be played individually too – whatever you prefer.

With game design by BAFTA award-winning Coney and written by Tamasha’s Artistic Director Fin Kennedy (How To Disappear Completely And Never Be Found) and playwright Rabiah Hussain (Spun), your adventure will last around an hour before ending at Rich Mix. Here, you can give some feedback and take part in our one-day-only immersive exhibition – featuring portraits of local women involved in the project, mini podcasts produced by students from the Mulberry Schools Trust to learn more from the people of this place, as well as how the game was co-created. You’ll get your chance to share your Shadow and light refreshments will be available, too.

We are Shadows is open and available to everyone. If you have access requirements please get in touch with to discuss alternative models of the game.

A Coney & Tamasha Digital joint project in collaboration with Rightful Place Theatre Company, supported by Derwent London and Rich Mix.
