The groove always starts with the bass – and when that bass is in the hands of Manou Gallo, the groove never stops.
Born in Ivory Coast but now based in Belgium, the virtuoso bassist is also a brilliant frontwoman, leading a troupe of white-hot musicians in a sound that fuses everything from reggae to deep funk.
Fresh from guesting with bass legend Bootsy Collins, who’s repaid the favour by producing her new album, Gallo is in town for one night only – and she’s spending it at Rich Mix for this exclusive London African Music Festival show.
To open, there’s a set from a floor-filling band led by another ace of bass, Emmanuel Adeniran. Rooted in Nigeria but based in London, The Afrocentrics blend the sounds and rhythms of the African diaspora – from funk to salsa and all points in between.
