Join us for a magical summer night of musical performance, led by virtuoso British guitarist Zayn Mohammed, with support from acclaimed improv duo Hues of Imagination.
Zayn Mohammed is an award-winning British guitarist, producer and multi-instrumentalist, playing sarod, ud, rebab and ney. Ranked by some alongside jazz legends such as John McLaughlin and George Benson, Zayn received his BA from the prestigious Berklee College of Music; he was also mentored by Miles Davis‘ biggest influence – his uncle Ahmad Jamal. Winner of Sky TV’s 2016 Guitar Star, Zayn’s musicality is rooted in jazz, flamenco, Turkish mevlevi makam and Indian raga. His unique brand of world-jazz is laden with virtuosic improvisation, heartfelt composition, and perfumed by his roots. Contemporary and sacred music, driven by introspection from his private journey on the Sufi path, provide cosmic palettes of influences, allowing him to reflect both the sounds of the ancient and modern.
Anatolian kamancha fiddle player Melisa Yıldırım and Indian tabla player Swarupa Ananth created musical magic when they met in early 2022 during a OneBeat 9 residency in Florida and recorded a spontaneous and extraordinary album in one take, now released as Hues of Imagination. This month, the duo meet for the first time since that session to reconnect on stage as musical soulmates to explore where improvisation and inspiration takes both them and the audience.
Melisa graduated from Conservatory of Music at Istanbul Technical University with first class honours, and Swarupa, who was mentored by Zakir Hussain, has performed with her group Filter Coffee at Southbank Centre and Glastonbury.
This concert is seated.
Supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
