From Fri 11 Aug we say hello to Kokomo City, the double Sundance award-winning debut documentary from Grammy winner D. Smith, chronicling the lives of four Black transgender sex workers in New York and Atlanta. Shot in striking black and white, Smith and her subjects offer a refreshing rawness and vulnerability, unconcerned with purity and politeness. D. Smith masterfully uses low-key humour and editorial wit as a salve for processing harsh experiences, as well as providing an important document of the courage, anxieties, struggles and heart of this community. Have a read of The Guardian’s glowing review, and catch the trailer.

Also from Fri 11 Aug it’s time for Talk to Me, the debut feature from Australian YouTuber twins Danny and Michael Philippou (known as RackaRacka). When a group of friends discover how to conjure spirits using an embalmed hand, they become hooked on the new thrill – until one of them goes too far and unleashes terrifying supernatural forces. An entertaining chiller that mixes shrieking horror and psychological nuance without resorting to cheap jump-scares, Talk to Me combines social commentary with chills and thrills that you won’t forget in a hurry. Check out Little White Lies’ adoring review, and check out the chilling trailer!

‘Scrapper’ image courtesy of Picturehouse.

From Fri 25 Aug we welcome Scrapper, the award-winning British comedy-drama from first-time director Charlotte Regan. Set in the heart of East London (much like a certain cinema..)

Jason (Harris DickinsonTriangle of Sadness, Where the Crawdads Sing) returns from Ibiza to live with his 12-year-old daughter Georgie, whom he has never previously met, after the death of her mother. Jason and Georgie are like flipped mirror images of each other – one a child before her time, the other an adult who is only just beginning to grow up. While comparisons are there to be made with 2022’s superb Aftersun, Scrapper brings a new, distinct and playful voice to the father-daughter dynamic. Check out The Wrap’s review, and watch the trailer!
