Also incoming is a groundbreaking and timely British indie – including a Q&A screening with the director, and the possibilities of animation continue to be re-invented. If that wasn’t enough, we have the return of a National Theatre gem. Summer is hotting up, and so are the movies!

Now showing in our cinema is the jaw-dropping animated sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Sony Pictures Animation continues their re-invention of the genre as voice actor Miles Morales is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People, charged with protecting its very existence. With an all-star cast featuring the familiar voices of Oscar Isaac (Dune, Ex Machina), Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out, Nope), Issa Rae (The Lovebirds, The Photograph), and many more; Across the Spider-Verse is a continuation of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse revolutionary visual style. Capitalising on the multiverse phenomenon taking over contemporary cinema, the film offers a rip-roaring adventure, with no limits to the creative possibilities at play. Have a read of Little White Lies’ glowing review, and check out the awesome trailer for Across the Spider-Verse.

From Fri 9 Jun, we’ll be screening War Pony, theCaméra d’Or winning debut feature from star actress turned first-time-director Riley Keough (Zola, American Honey). The film follows the intertwined lives of two young Oglala Lakota boys (Jojo Bapteise Whiting and Ladainian Crazy Thunder) growing up on Pine Ridge Reservation; as they grapple with identity, family, and loss, navigating their paths to manhood. Using first-time, indigenous actors, Slash Film says War Pony provides an ‘honest look at a community seldom portrayed on screen with care. ‘Pretty Red Dress’ image courtesy of BFI Films.

From Fri 16 Jun Pretty Red Dress will arrive on our screens, the groundbreaking debut feature from London-based filmmaker Dionne Edwards. Natey Jones stars as Travis, who, fresh out of prison, buys his girlfriend Candice (Alexandra Burke) her dream dress for an audition. But rather than smoothing over their relationship, it exacerbates newfound problems, as Travis is forced to re-examine who he is and how he wants to be perceived in the world. Expertly examining gender roles, femininity, and different shades of masculinity – all accompanied by some great musical numbers: Edwards tells the story with nuance and care, making this indie a must watch this month, and continuing 2023’s run of fantastic British films. Be sure to book in for our screening and Q&A with Dionne Edwards on Wed 21 Jun!

‘Asteroid City’ image courtesy of Universal Pictures.

From Fri 23 Jun we are bringing in Asteroid City, the critically acclaimed new feature from director Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel, The French Dispatch). Premiering ‘In Competition’ at Cannes, Asteroid City is set in a fictional American desert town circa 1955, where the Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention is spectacularly disrupted by world-changing events. Anderson has once again assembled an all-star ensemble cast with the likes of Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan), Scarlett Johansson (Avengers: Endgame, Jojo Rabbit), Tilda Swinton (We Need to Talk about Kevin, The Chronicles of Narnia) Edward Norton (Fight Club, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery) and many, many more. Few contemporary directors are as distinct and influential as Anderson, and his new hit, which critics have been calling ‘one of his very best movies yet’ (read the Indie Wire low-down here), promises to be an unmissable cinema experience this summer. Check out the fantastical trailer for Asteroid City, as well as Vanity Fair’s gleaming review.

Finally, Thu 15 Jun and Sun 18 Jun marks the return of the cultural phenomenon that is NT Live: Fleabag, which paved the way for the beloved television show, the Hot Priest, and the stratospheric career of Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Solo: A Star-Wars Story, No Time to Die). Written and performed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge  and directed by  Vicky Jones, Fleabag is a rip-roaring look at some sort of woman living her sort of life – be sure to not miss out this time around!
