This month we look at the work of Curaçaoan-born Dutch artist, curator, writer and filmmaker Felix de Rooy.
Despite being described as “a source for all black arts in the Netherlands”, chances are you haven’t heard of him.
De Rooy’s work has been pivotal in reframing the narrative of Dutch identity and particularly the Netherlands’ relationship with its colonial history and the legacy of the slave trade. An artist who is both known and forgotten.
This café will reflect on De Rooy’s legacy to explore who gets to be considered European and who gets to inform a European Cultural Narrative.
Be the first to hear work from Dutch and British playwrights who are in the midst of collaborating on Boom! – a new series of play commissions to confront and engage with our shared colonial history, including Gable Roelofsen and Jude Christian. Also hear from Dutch-Surinamese artist, writer and curator Charl Landvreugd, whose work examines citizenship and belonging and how this is expressed in visual arts in continental Europe.
