Buddleia: The Unchained Story – Tracy Kiryango (documentary)
On 9 Feb 2009, Brenda Birungi was sentenced to prison. She was arrested for protecting her sister, who was attacked by two women in a nightclub. During her time in prison, she fell in love with poetry; the creative arts was her saviour, and helped reinstate her faith in God after her unjust sentencing.
Soon after her release, she immersed herself in poetry workshops, social work, and helping young people who are facing problems within the criminal justice system, and started her own poetry event called ‘Unchained Nights’, where ex-convicts can share their stories. Brenda later went on to do a TED Talk, and became a radio host for a show called ‘Free Flower’ on National Prison Radio.
This documentary explores the positive impact ex-convicts can have on society when provided with the right support and guidance upon their release.
