They all have been victims of fake news, political defamation, and death threats since Bolsonaro’s election in late 2018. Yet, they have developed different creative strategies to counter the destruction of their public/political careers launched by extreme far-right actors in Brazil.

Through creative and inspiring storytelling, Resistances features a series of four short films (15-20 min each) where the protagonists narrate, from the different locations of their exile, be it Barcelona, Paris or New York, the different actions of survival in their struggle to reconstruct the private, public, and political spaces they occupied before becoming victims of Bolsonaro’s ‘ministry of hate’.

This mini-series aims to serve as an inspiration of how strategies for self-defense through art and words may enthuse many other people from across the political spectrum who are victims of fake news and character assassination through social networks hate campaigns led by authoritarian regimes in Latin America and beyond.

Resistances was created by Jean Wyllys, Francesc Badia and filmmaker Cristina Juliana Abril.

Produced by democraciaAbierta Bogotá and openDemocracy London in 2021/2022.

The screening will be followed by a debate with Francesc Badia, Jean Wyllys, Marcia Tiburi, Wagner Schwartz and Debora Diniz, moderated by Victor Fraga from DMovies.
