The Living Room is a nostalgic and celebratory event where speakers get to reminisce and consider how they have engaged with attempts at building their own versions of utopia within the community. The night will consist of intergenerational conversations about reimagining the world we currently live in taking into account the past, present, and future of our community.

Hosted by: 

Sofia Akel cultural historian and producer, researcher, Black British studies lecturer and founder of the non-profit, Free Books Campaign. From leading institutional strategies to tackle systemic racism to entire reviews of organisational practice, her work spans numerous sectors including the creative, educational and charity industries, publishing multiple leading research studies.

On the sofa: 

Samia Dumbuya climate justice activist intersecting social justice issues with environmental issues, as these issues cannot be separated. Samia is a part of the Seize the Vote collective, a platform for young people of colour to be politically engaged and empowered.

Stella Dadzie, published writer and feminist historian, best known for The Heart of the Race: Black Women’s lives in Britain which won the 1985 Martin Luther King Award for Literature. She is a founder member of OWAAD (Organisation of Women of African and Asian Descent), a national umbrella group for Black women that emerged in the late 1970s as part of the British Civil Rights movement.

Ife Thompson is a Criminal Defence Lawyer, Community Activist, United Nations Fellow, Black cultural Curator and Writer. She is the founder of BLAM UK, a charity promoting a truthful dialogue of Blackness through the analysis of history and active community outreach, as well as Black Protest Legal Support UK, an organisation offering legal advice and support for protesters in the UK. She is found disrupting white supremacy and building futures around Afro-futurism, Pan-Africanism and Black radical tradition.

With a special guest performance from the one and only Kadeem Tyrell.
