From sculpture into motion, from motion into emotion.
Indian classical forms are like a constellation of different aspects and precisions that extend from the stitching of costumes, to the right amount of garlands, to the number of ghungroos for each style of dance. This showcase will explore different textures and levels of Indian classical dance and Purulia Chhau across India within their historical, social, economic and cultural context. There will also be opportunities to experience various forms of Sangeetha (Music), Vadya (Percussion & Musical instruments), Aharyam (Costume & Make-up) and Sahitya (Literature).
A collective approach of the practitioners, and dance enthusiasts in India has helped us collect and acquire the materials for the programme, where equal importance will be given to the practitioners and educators as well as the army of craftsmen required to weave, craft, design and stitch the traditional elaborative Indian dance costumes which the performers will wear.
The performances will interpret temple sculptures of India through the medium of classical dance, highlighting their importance as cultural symbols of Hindu religious texts.
